How football and basketball squares work

Short answer: squares is a 10x10 grid for one game. Players pick boxes, the digits 0-9 are drawn at random for the rows and columns, and at the end of each quarter the last digit of each team's score points to the square that hits.

How do squares work?

Squares is a game played on a 10x10 grid for one football or basketball game. Each of the 100 boxes is a square. Players pick squares, then the numbers 0 to 9 are drawn at random for the 10 columns (one team) and the 10 rows (the other team).

At the end of each quarter, take the last digit of each team's score. The square where those two digits meet is the square that hits for that quarter.

How do you read a squares board?

Find the column with the last digit of the home team's score and the row with the last digit of the away team's score. Example: if the away team leads 17-14 after the first quarter, the digits are 7 (away) and 4 (home), so the square at row 7, column 4 hits.

When are the numbers drawn?

The numbers are drawn after the squares are picked, so nobody knows which digits they hold when they choose. On ScoreBoard each board locks 10 minutes before kickoff and the digits are drawn at random at that moment.

What are Right Way and Wrong Way squares?

Right Way is the normal reading: away team's digit on the row, home team's digit on the column. Wrong Way reverses the two digits. On ScoreBoard both count every quarter, so 8 squares hit in each game (4 quarters x 2 ways).

Does overtime count in squares?

On ScoreBoard the final square uses the final score of the game, so any overtime points are included. The first, second and third quarter squares use the score at the end of those quarters.

What are the best numbers in football squares?

In football, scores end in 0, 7, 3 and 4 far more often than in 2, 5 or 9, because touchdowns with extra points (7) and field goals (3) drive the score. In basketball every digit comes up about as often as any other, so no square is a dead one. See the real counts from finished games on our squares numbers page.

Can you play squares online for free?

Yes. ScoreBoard runs a free squares board for every NFL and NBA game. Squares are picked with free Tickets: new players get 250 free Tickets and 100 more every day. Nothing to buy, 21+, and Tickets have no cash value.

How is ScoreBoard different from a printable squares grid?

There is no grid to print, fill in or pass around. Everyone picks on their phone, the digits are drawn automatically, live scores move the highlight every quarter, and each pick gets a receipt with a verification code so the board history can be checked.
