NBA squares: why every digit is live

By the ScoreBoard team - published Nov 4, 2026, numbers updated Nov 4, 2026.

Short answer: in 174 finished NBA games, each last digit came up between 8.4% and 10.9% of the time at the end of a quarter - close to the 10% you would expect if every digit were equal. Football is the opposite: 0 and 7 alone made up 46.0% of NFL quarter-end digits.

Why do NBA scores spread across every digit?

NBA teams score about 25 to 30 points a quarter in 2s, 3s and free throws, so the last digit keeps moving and lands almost anywhere. Football scores move in big steps of 3 and 7, so they keep landing on the same few digits.

What does that mean for your squares?

On an NBA board there is no square to dread. Every square has a real chance to hit at the end of some quarter, which is why NBA squares stay fun the whole game. The pairs that came up most this season are below - and even the top pair only shows up a few percent of the time.
